King's Canyon Rough Fire Impact
By chance, I happened to make my first ever trip to King's Canyon in May 2015, just a few months prior to the Rough Fire that tore through the Canyon. I feel really fortunate that I had the chance to see, and photograph, the canyon in its full glory before the fire changed the landscape for years to come.
I was just as fortunate to be able to visit again this last week, a short while after the fire passed through the canyon, and to capture photos of the transformed scenery. It's quite stunning how much the fire impacted the area, and yet despite the damage, still looks absolutely breathtaking.
These two photos below, shot in before and after the Rough Fire, give you a hint of the extent of the fire. Alas, I wasn't able to get exactly the same view point for each as the road to Cedar Grove was still shut down.
This first photo was shot in May 2015, before the fire, from King's Canyon Scenic Byway near the vista point.
The second photo was shot in Oct 2015, after the fire, from a stop on Hume Lake Road.
